A new set is almost here, which is always so exciting!

 

Modern Horizons 3 prereleases this Friday! Although our Draft on Friday night is full, we still have some space in the sealed events on Saturday and Sunday. You can register for those prereleases at https://www.labyrinthdc.com/magic-events/, as well as for our other Magic events.

 

Including the Master of Modern tournament on June 29th. Master of Modern takes the place of an official store championship for MH3, and features an outsize prize pool, including a box of Modern Horizons 3 play boosters for the winner. Registrations for the event are already open, so don’t hesitate. Take the chance to prove yourself as Labyrinth’s Master of Modern.

 

The last major event of June is “Magic Presents: Pride” on June 30th. A special Commander event that has a special rule: all commanders have the Partner ability. This means that you can have any two commanders in the Command Zone, allowing for myriad possible combinations of colors, styles, and abilities. It should be a lot of fun, so we hope to see you there.

 

This week’s featured single is Static Orb as printed in the Masterpiece Series: Kaladesh Inventions. Played almost exclusively in Commander, Static Orb is one of the “meaner” cards in the format. For three generic mana, Static Orb virtually shuts down players’ untap steps… as long as it itself is untapped. Combined with artifact tapping abilities like Improvise, or another artifact like Pacification Array or Icy Manipulator, and you can tap Static Orb just before your turn to untap all of your permanents, while leaving your opponents stuck. Or even use Seedborn Muse or Wilderness Reclamation to untap all your lands at odd times, so you can still cast spells while your opponents struggle to find mana. The Masterpiece series, as mentioned in other Magic Mondays, are beautifully rendered and highly collectible.
