Upcoming events, changes to Casual Commander, and recent winners!
It’s just another Magic Monday!
The weather is heating up, and so are the Magic events! Tarkir: Dragonstorm draft continues to be a hot ticket, and we’re running another one this Friday at FNM. We’re also running our special Standard Showdown on Friday ahead of the Standard Store Championship on Sunday. Both events feature sweet promos and the chance to earn store credit and glory!
On May 16th and 23rd we’re adding a special twist to FNM draft! We’ll be hosting special Spring Flourishes drafts featuring TDM and an emblem for each player to start each game with: every player draws an extra card during their draw step, and each player can play an extra land on each of their turns. This should add a fun challenge for drafting and deckbuilding, and we’re excited to see how it shakes up the format. You’ll also receive a special promo for participating! So be sure to circle those dates on your calendars!
On the 17th and 18th we’re running back-to-back Magic: Academy sessions! On Saturday the 17th it’s Learn To Play, where we teach new players the ins and outs of Magic basics. If you have a friend curious about the game, send them our way Saturday the 17th. And on the 18th, we’re hosting a Deckbuilding session. This event requires registration but gives you the chance to learn about limited deckbuilding and is the perfect way to prepare for a prerelease.
On the 24th, we’re hosting our next Regional Championship Qualifier! The top 8 finishers earn cash prizes in this competitive tournament and the top 2 finishers earn the right to advance to a Regional Championship later this year! If you want to start on the path to joining the Pro Tour, check out our RCQ and start your journey! You can sign up for the RCQ, the Store Championship, and all our Magic events at https://labyrinthdc.com/magic-events.
On another note: we’re so grateful for the amazing community that has built up around our Tuesday night Casual Commander events. You’ve made it one of the most popular and fun nights of the week at Labyrinth—and we love seeing so many of you gathered around tables, making new friends and sharing your love of Magic.
That said, in order to continue running this event sustainably, we’ll be increasing the registration fee to $10 starting in June. You’ll still receive a free booster pack with entry, and the event will remain casual and welcoming to all. Registration will continue to open on Tuesdays at noon.
This decision wasn’t made lightly. Over the past year, our costs—from staffing to space use to product—have steadily gone up. At the current rate, we simply aren’t able to cover the expenses of running the event without making adjustments. We want to ensure that we can continue offering Tuesday Commander nights for the long term, and this change will help us do that.
We know any price increase is frustrating, and we truly appreciate your understanding and continued support. The Commander community here at Labyrinth is something special, and we’re committed to continuing to make it a great place to gather, play, and belong.
Thank you for being a part of it.
This week’s featured card is Strip Mine. Ubiquitous in Vintage, Strip Mine also sees extensive play in Commander. This card is a land, so it has no casting cost, that taps for a colorless mana or destroys any other land. The owner of that land doesn’t get to search for a replacement of any kind; it’s just gone. A card this powerful is already heavily sought. This particular copy is from the Secret Lair: Totally Spaced Out release of 2022 and features a special Galaxy Foil treatment. The card is beautiful in person and can be yours if you head over to https://labyrinthgameshop.tcgplayerpro.com/. And if you want to sell us your rare beauties, reach out to us at [email protected].
And finally our weekly winners! Congratulations to Marcus Handy, Charles Boebinger, and Nicholas Tanzer, our Draft Champions from Friday! And special congratulations to Brady Munroe, our first ever winner of a Beltway Cup Qualifier!
That’s all for this week! See you next Magic Monday!
